POSITION OVERVIEW
The Custodian plays a crucial role in maintaining cleanliness, safety, and functionality within the school environment. This position is essential for ensuring a clean and organized school facility that supports the health and well-being of students, staff, and visitors.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Responsibilities and duties may vary but the essential job duties will include the following:
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, classrooms, offices, and common areas according to established protocols.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, and polish floors.
- Empty and clean waste containers and recycle bins.
- Dust and wipe down furniture, fixtures, and surfaces.
- Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment, and request replenishment as needed.
- Perform minor maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, repairing fixtures, and reporting larger maintenance issues.
- Assist with setting up and breaking down rooms for events, meetings, and activities.
- Ensure all doors and windows are securely locked at the end of the day.
- Follow all health and safety regulations and procedures, including handling hazardous materials.
- Mowing, trimming, and edging lawns to keep them neat and healthy.
- Planting, watering, weeding, and maintaining flower beds and shrubs.
- Raking and collecting leaves, especially in the fall, to keep grounds tidy.
- Picking up litter, trash, and other debris from outdoor areas, including parking lots, sidewalks, and gardens.
- Shoveling or using equipment to clear snow and ice from walkways, entrances, and parking areas during winter months.
- Applying mulch in flower beds and around trees to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Grounds care including mowing, weed eating, pruning, etc.
- Checking and maintaining irrigation systems to ensure proper watering of plants and lawns.
- Pruning, trimming, and caring for trees and shrubs to maintain their health and appearance.
- Monitoring and managing pests that may harm plants or the overall landscape.
- Keeping landscaping tools and equipment clean and in good working order.
- Ensuring that walkways and paths are clear, safe, and well-maintained.
- Inspecting outdoor areas for hazards such as broken branches or uneven surfaces and reporting issues.
- Keeping outdoor signs clean and in good condition.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The supervisor outlines the overall objectives and priorities, timelines, and the financial and personnel resources available. The employee plans and schedules recurring work, handles problems and completes work using own initiative, exercising judgement according to previous training, experience, and instructions. Work is reviewed from an overall standpoint in terms of meeting objectives, effectiveness, accuracy, and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.

This position can be physically demanding, requiring good health and physical condition to adequately perform job duties. Employees may be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move heavy loads. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
JOB CONDITIONS
It is the attendance standards of the employer that all employees are present and on time each shift they are scheduled to work. Unauthorized full or partial absence during any scheduled shift, arriving late, or leaving early, for whatever reason, may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment. Time off may be approved if allowed by applicable policies.
Job requires the use of office equipment including, but not limited to, computers with Microsoft Office, internet, tablets, telephones, cell phones, two-way radios, pagers, copy machines, and fax machines.
This position occasionally requires driving and the use of KFCS vehicles.
The work environment may include indoor and outdoor assignments, near moving machinery and traffic.
All types of weather conditions may be encountered, including temperature extremes, wet, dry, hot and below freezing weather, during day and night in stressful emergency situations.
Exposure to alarms, noxious odors, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
Potential exposure to bodily fluids; airborne, blood borne and other communicable diseases.
Noises levels from: quiet office setting to high levels.

TRAINING PERIOD
The required probationary period for a new employee is 60 working days. Upon successful completion of the probationary period of employment, the employee will achieve “regular” employee status.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Certifications and licenses must be maintained for the duration of employment.
Education
High School Diploma or GED (preferred).
Certifications/Licenses
Possession of a driver’s license valid in Oregon and maintain a safe driving record throughout the duration of employment.
Experience
Proven experience in custodial work or a related field preferred.
Familiarity with safety regulations and procedures related to custodial work.
Other
Ability to pass a background check.
Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and occasional overtime as needed.
